When kidneys fail, there are two primary treatment options: dialysis and transplantation. A kidney transplant is a significant surgical procedure wherein a patient receives a new kidney from either a living or deceased donor. Female patients may also consider family planning post-transplant.
A successful kidney transplant stands as the foremost treatment for end-stage kidney failure. In Singapore, kidney transplants originate from two sources: living donors and deceased donors. Undergoing a kidney transplant promises an improved quality of life. Patients are relieved from the discomfort and complications associated with dialysis and encounter fewer dietary restrictions.
Our kidney transplant care team
At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, our kidney transplant team brings decades of expertise and experience in caring for and assisting kidney transplant patients to prolong and enhance their quality of life. Usually, there exists a disparity between organ demand and the supply of deceased donor organs, resulting in prolonged wait times for suitable deceased donor kidney transplants. However, at our transplant facilities, through prompt coordinating strategies, there is a significant reduction in this time gap notably decreasing the lengthy wait time for a suitable deceased donor kidney transplant.
Rest assured, you will be in the capable hands of our skilled and empathetic team, which comprises a multidisciplinary group of medical specialists, including kidney transplant physicians, urologists, nephrologists, general surgeons, and anaesthesiologists.

Living organ donation is well-established and viable. At Mount Elizabeth Hospitals, your safety as a donor is paramount. Our transplant teams see you as a real person beyond the organ you are giving, so you are treated with the same respect and consideration that we accord to all of our patients.
Living donor regulations in Singapore
Under the Human Organ Transplant Act (HOTA), it is prohibited to engage in the buying or selling of organs.
You should be able to make your donation free from any pressure or coercion, and monetary compensation for donation is strictly prohibited. However, expenses related to health checks, laboratory tests, the donation operation, and follow-up medical visits can be reimbursed under HOTA. Additionally, if you are self-employed or a daily-wage worker, you may be eligible for limited compensation to cover loss of earnings.
Before proceeding with a living donor transplant, a Transplant Ethics Committee (TEC) will assess and authorize the procedure. This rigorous evaluation ensures that you are fully informed about the risks and implications of your donation, both present and future. The TEC also addresses ethical considerations, ensuring that your decision is made without any coercion, undue influence, or fraud.
If the Transplant Ethics Committee (TEC) approves the application for a living donor organ transplant, you will still have a 7-day cooling-off period to carefully reconsider and confirm your decision.
How to become a living organ donor
If you and the recipient share a personal connection, you may seek guidance from our hospital's transplant services.
Altruistic donations intended for patients on the national kidney or liver waiting list can be registered with the National Organ Transplant Unit (NOTU). The expenses associated with assessing your suitability for a living donor transplant will be covered by NOTU.
Following an initial consultation with our team, a thorough series of medical assessments will be conducted. Upon ensuring that your well-being will not be compromised by the donation, we will seek authorization from the Transplant Ethics Committee (TEC) to proceed.
Risks of being a living donor
Organ donation surgery is considered relatively safe; however, like any surgical procedure, there are inherent risks involved in donating an organ. Liver donations, in particular, carry a higher risk of complications and mortality compared to kidney donations. Some potential risks include:
Generally, once you have fully recovered from the donation procedure, you can expect to resume normal life activities. It is important to note that donating an organ will not impact a female donor's ability to conceive.
To assess your suitability as a liver donor, you will undergo a series of tests and screenings. You may qualify to donate your liver if you meet the following criteria:
Similar assessments and screenings are required to determine eligibility as a kidney donor for the recipient. You may be considered a suitable kidney donor if you meet the following criteria:
