6) Mount Elizabeth Proton Therapy Centre

At Mount Elizabeth Proton Therapy Centre, patients benefit from pencil beam scanning proton therapy, an advanced radiation treatment technique. This method utilizes proton beams to precisely target tumors while preserving surrounding healthy tissues and organs, thus minimizing radiation exposure. Proton therapy, also known as proton beam therapy, offers numerous advantages, including reducing radiation exposure to healthy tissues, lowering the integral dose per treatment, treating recurrent tumors in previously irradiated patients, potentially decreasing the risk of secondary cancers, and improving patients' quality of life. It is particularly effective for tumors with complex anatomy or those near sensitive tissues, including childhood cancers.

Commonly treated conditions include brain cancer, head and neck cancer, liver cancer, lymphoma, esophageal cancer, prostate cancer, spinal tumors, and soft tissue sarcomas. For a comprehensive list of approved indications, please consult the Ministry of Health’s website.

Proton therapy Process

A) CT Simulation:

This initial procedure involves the preparation of custom immobilization accessories tailored to the patient's needs. The treatment team will perform CT imaging to create a detailed 3D anatomical map of the patient and make reference marks to ensure accurate treatment positioning during subsequent sessions.

The simulation process usually lasts about an hour, during which the patient should not experience any discomfort.

If any special preparations are necessary, such as bowel emptying or adherence to a specific diet, the patient will be informed once the procedure is scheduled.

B) Treatment Planning:

Following the CT simulation, the obtained images are used to customize the patient's treatment plan. Collaborating closely, the physicist and radiation oncologist determine precise radiation dosages needed to target cancer cells while sparing surrounding healthy tissues. Using advanced treatment planning software, the physicist optimizes this process.

Once approved, the treatment plan undergoes quality assurance (QA) measurements on the proton therapy machine. These ensure alignment with the optimized radiation dose distribution. Upon successful QA completion, proton therapy treatment begins. Notably, the patient does not need to be physically present at the clinic for this step.

C) Proton Therapy Treatment:

Proton therapy begins once planning and QA results meet clinical requirements and align with patient-specific QA measurements. The patient is positioned on the treatment table, matching the CT simulation position, and aligned using laser systems.

Pre-treatment verification, including CBCT or X-ray images, ensures optimal positioning before proton therapy starts. Once confirmed, the team administers the treatment, monitoring the entire session. Communication with the patient via CCTV/Intercom is available as needed.

While each proton treatment typically lasts around 5 minutes (duration varies based on the treatment plan), the entire session takes approximately 30 minutes due to setup verification and imaging requirements.

D) Regular Consultation:

Proton therapy typically consists of multiple daily treatment sessions scheduled five days a week, spanning up to eight weeks, depending on the patient's diagnosis. Throughout the treatment period, radiation oncologists will regularly consult with the patient, either weekly or as necessary, to evaluate treatment progress, address any concerns the patient may have, and strategize future treatments. The treatment plan may be modified, such as in cases where the tumor size decreases, during the course of treatment.

E) Follow-up Care:

After completing radiation treatments, follow-up appointments will be arranged. Patients may be requested to undergo additional investigations, such as CT, PET, or MRI scans, before these appointments. Our specialists will oversee the recovery process and provide guidance on follow-up care.

Proton beam therapy is typically painless, allowing patients to resume their daily activities afterward. As a result of this therapy, most patients will not require hospitalization.
